| Minnesota tests students for virus The University of Minnesota quarantined 90 international students to avoid the possible spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The students, who arrived in the United States for agricultural internships, stayed isolated for seven days, the amount of time scientists believe it takes to kill the virus when carried by humans. The students also had to buy new shoes and wash their clothes to avoid spreading the contagious disease to farm animals and livestock. Foot-and-mouth disease is currently spreading in the United Kingdom, with breakouts in Ireland, France, Argentina and the Netherlands. MSU virtual AP classes a success Michigan State University began offering advanced placement courses on the Internet to high school seniors last semester. MSUs Virtual University enables high school seniors to take online courses for college credit. MSUs completion rate for AP classes is around 80 percent. University officials believe they are expanding the learning opportunities for Michigan high school students, since nearly 40 percent of the states high schools do not offer advanced placement courses. --Sharon Coar |
