Season subscriptions are now on sale for the UGA Performing Arts Center’s 2001-2002 season, which will include 31 performances in seven series.
“This will be our sixth year of presentations and definitely one of the best seasons of entertainment that we have brought to Athens,” says Timothy A. Bartholow, director of the Office of Performing Arts. “We will hear some great orchestras--the Atlanta Symphony, the BBC Concert Orchestra of London, the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg, and I Musici--plus one of the most varied dance series yet with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, SwingDance America, and Russia’s Grigorovich Ballet in Swan Lake.
Other highlights of the season are Athens native Leo Kottke on guitar on Sept. 21 in the Showtime Series, folk performers Jay Ungar and Molly Mason on April 13 in the Traditions Series, and a variety of Welsh and Irish music and jazz.
The Performing Arts Center’s current season has been one of the most successful since the center opened in 1996. When the season is completed at the end of April, attendance figures are projected to show a 10 percent increase over the previous year’s total. The Performing Arts Center also is completing its third year of concert broadcasts on National Public Radio’s Performance Today, heard by 1.5 million listeners across the country, and, with the support of the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach, the center continued to expand its educational programs, offering master classes and lecture-demonstrations to students throughout the state of Georgia.
Subscriptions for the coming season are on sale at the Performing Arts Center box office. Season subscribers can purchase single tickets for individual performances beginning Aug. 13; single tickets for individual performances go on sale to the general public beginning Aug. 27.
Subscription prices are $120-$136 for Music Series I or II, $60-$70 for Showtime, $70 for Traditions, $60-$69 for Dance Festival, and $55 for the Ramsey Hall Series. There is no charge for the Franklin College Chamber Music Series. For $32, UGA students can purchase a pass to attend four presentations at the Performing Arts Center during the season. For a free brochure or to order tickets, call the box office at 542-4400. The box office is open weekdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and two hours prior to every performance.
