Louis A. Castenell, dean of the College of Education, is chair of the board of directors of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
The AACTE is composed of more than 750 higher education institutions dedicated to improving the education of educators. Its membership includes private, state and municipal colleges and universities in every state.
The AACTE works to expand the knowledge base about teaching and teacher education, promoting research through a variety of publications and the scholarly Journal of Teacher Education.

Stephen Corey, associate and acting editor of The Georgia Review, has been named Georgia Author of the Year in Poetry for the third time by the Georgia Writers Association. The award was for Corey’s Greatest Hits, 1980-2000, a volume of selected poems published in 2000 by Pudding House Press of Johnstown, Ohio.
The Georgia Writers Association provides information and support for the state’s writers through classes and workshops, an annual festival and a newsletter. The Georgia Author of the Year Awards are given in several categories, including the novel, short fiction, history, essays, self-help, children’s literature and lifetime achievement.

Athletic Director Vincent J. Dooley received the Individual Achievement Award from the Georgia Urban Forest Council. The annual award is based on highly significant accomplishments in promoting urban forestry in Georgia.
Dooley received the award for his leadership in having the UGA campus designated as an arboretum, which increases recognition of the value of trees on the scenic campus that serves as an outdoor classroom environment for research, teaching and public service.

Neil R. Hughes, head of music cataloging at the UGA Main Library, was elected to the Music Library Association’s board of directors. He will serve the first year of his two-year term as assistant fiscal officer and the second as fiscal officer.
The MLA is the professional organization in the United States devoted to music librarianship and to all aspects of music materials in libraries, representing more than 2,000 librarians, scholars, publishers, music library vendors and institutions. Founded in 1931, MLA provides a forum for study and action on issues that affect music libraries and their users.

Henry F. Schaefer III, Graham Perdue Professor Chemistry, presented endowed lectures at the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) in Haifa and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Schaefer, also director of the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at UGA, gave the Israel Pollak Distinguished Lecture Series at the Technion and the Lise Meitner Lecture at Hebrew University.
