Margaret Crumpton, a graduate teaching assistant working with the Office of Instructional Support and Development, won the Bill and Ginny McKeachie Award for her paper: “Working with Teachers to Make Learning Fun: Family History in the Multicultural Classroom.” The international competition was associated with the conference on Improving Learning and Teaching to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, this summer. Crumpton will be attending the conference to present her paper and to receive the award.

Stan Brassie, head of physical education and sports studies, received the Sport Management Council Award from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. The award recognizes individuals who make outstanding contributions and provide leadership in the field of sport management.
Brassie has been president of NASPE and has received four NASPE Distinguished Achievement awards and the Honor Award from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He has been very active with graduate accreditation review boards and has served as a curriculum and program consultant for 22 colleges and universities. Brassie serves as coordinator of Special Olympics Summer Area Games and is on the Atlanta Sports Council. He is a member of the U.S. Collegiate Sports Council and the International Commission for the Study of University Sport.

The Georgia Center for Continuing Education marketing staff received the Best in Show Award from the University Continuing Education Association.
The Georgia Center’s “Report of Institutional Progress,” created by John Shores, Margaret Au Couch, Nancy Bennett Evelyn and Toni Reed, won a Gold Award for a booklet of three or more colors and was the overall “Best in Show” winner from all categories in the competition. The marketing staff also won a Bronze Award for the booklet “Transitions into the 21st Century,” by Sylvia McLaurin, Toni Reed, Margaret Au Couch, Nancy Bennett Evelyn and Heather Damaske.

Professor of mathematics education James Wilson received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics Education from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Wilson has served for 24 years as head of the mathematics education department at UGA. During his 42-year career his seminal scholarly contributions to mathematics education have focused on problem solving, assessment and technology.
A former editor of NCTM’s Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, Wilson also has made a substantial contribution to mathematics education in the United States through curriculum writing.
He has authored two mathematics text series for grades K-8 over 20 years and authored a college methods text.

Kudos recognizes special contributions of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service. New items are limited to election into offices of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments.
