Doug Kleiber, professor and head of the recreation and leisure studies department, has been appointed director of the College of Education’s School of Health and Human Performance.
Kleiber, who has been department head of rec and leisure studies since joining the UGA faculty in 1989, will begin his new duties as school director July 1.
“Through his leadership and recruitment of faculty, he has led this department to being nationally recognized,” says Dean Louis Castenell in announcing the appointment. “His strong national reputation will be of benefit to the school and college as we continue to develop into a leading College of Education.”
Before coming to UGA, Kleiber was an associate professor in the department of leisure studies at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign from 1980 to 1989.
While at Illinois, Kleiber served as his department’s director of graduate studies, assistant head and director of the Leisure Behavior Research Laboratory. He was an assistant professor in the department from 1977 to 1980. He was an assistant professor in the psychology department at St. Cloud State University from 1974 to 1977.
Kleiber received his Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972. He received an A.B. in psychology from Cornell University in 1969.
His research interests have included social psychology of leisure and sport, life-span development, motivation and leisure education.
“I am very pleased to be assuming responsibility for a unit that addresses the subjects of health and well being across the lifespan. “These are important matters of concern for everyone,” says Kleiber.
