‘Tomorrow’s technology today’

Tucked in a corner of the Riverbend research campus on College Station Road, UGA’s Center for Applied Isotope Studies has for two decades served quietly as an analytical laboratory.
With the recent installation of a $1.25 million accelerator mass spectrometer, things stand to get a lot busier around CAIS.

Jonathan Evans, UGA English professor, has unearthed a Norse grammatical usage in a manuscript of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle--pushing back by a century the first written evidence of a Norse word in what would become modern English.



An open letter to the university community

Much attention has been focused on the search to fill a new senior administrative post created to provide leadership in developing a campus-wide program to support equity and diversity at the University of Georgia. Many people have spent a good deal of time and thought on this process--a testament to the importance with which it is viewed.

Biochemistry head named
Regents Professor


David Puett, professor and head of the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at the university, has been named a Regents Professor. His appointment was approved by the board at its meeting in March.
Regents Professorships are granted by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents to outstanding faculty members.


Online learning: Electronic journals now integrated through Galileo

The UGA Libraries integrated all of its electronic subscriptions with the online databases already available through Galileo, the University System of Georgia initiative to create a statewide electronic library.
Now a UGA user can log into Galileo with a password which recognizes UGA users (available through the GIL user account) and access these databases, in many cases, both on- and off-campus.


Students win Goldwater Scholarships


All four students at UGA competing for Barry M. Goldwater scholarships have been successful in their efforts. This is the second time in the last five years that all UGA candidates were awarded the scholarships. This year’s Goldwater scholars from UGA are Beth Orcutt, Paul Pollack, Steven Smith and Lakshmi Swamy.




UGA Ballet Ensemble presents
its Spring Gala

Featured guest dancers Bobby Ball and Amy Fote of the Milwaukee Ballet, costuming by Canadian designer E.K. Ayotte, and scenic design by Athens’s own Stan Mullins will be highlights of the UGA Ballet Ensemble’s Spring Gala 2001. The performance will be presented at 8 p.m. on April 19, 20 and 21, and at 2 p.m. on April 22.
