UGA Ballet Ensemble presents its Spring Gala
Featured guest dancers Bobby Ball and Amy Fote of the Milwaukee Ballet, costuming by Canadian designer E.K. Ayotte, and scenic design by Athens’s own Stan Mullins will be highlights of the UGA Ballet Ensemble’s Spring Gala 2001. The performance will be presented at 8 p.m. on April 19, 20 and 21, and at 2 p.m. on April 22.
Spring Gala 2001 will include artistic director Joan Buttram’s restaging of Act Two of the classical ballet Giselle, originally choreographed by Jean Corralli and Jules Perot in 1841. Other works on the program include Departure from Fifth, choreographed by Cynthia Pratt; Reflet de l’image, choreographed by Tom Morris; and Six, choreographed by the dance department’s artist-in-residence Molissa Fenley.
The concert features Adjustable Wrench, a 12-minute neoclassical ballet choreographed for the UGA Ballet Ensemble by Andrew Kuharsky, to an original score by Michael Torke. Kuharsky, artistic director of the Greenville Ballet of South Carolina, has danced professionally as a soloist with Les Grand Ballets Canadiens in Montreal and as a principal dancer with the Atlanta Ballet. He has choreographed works for several American ballet companies.
The program will be presented in original costuming by E.K. Ayotte, who has provided costume direction to many major international ballet companies as well as theater and opera companies and feature films.
Performances will be held at the new dance theater in the dance building (the 1928 wing of the former women’s physical education building). Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $8 for students, children and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the Tate Student Center cashier’s window (542-8074) and will also be available at the door one hour prior to the performance, if still available.
