| College awaits pledge payment An anonymous donor pledged $40.5 million to St. Marys College of California four years ago to pay for the construction of a new building and the renovation of another. Construction of the new $21 million, 56,000-square-foot building for the chemistry department is complete, but the college has not received the money from the donor yet. School officials still expect to get the gift, which would be the largest monetary donation in the 138-year history of the Roman Catholic college. The $12 million renovation of the 40,000-square-foot science building has been halted until the money comes through. Business leaders downplay tests Several business executives joined the National Urban League in trying to persuade colleges and universities to de-emphasize college admission test results in their selection process. The business leaders sent letters to more than 700 colleges and universities urging them to pay less attention to SAT and ACT scores. Personality factors such as creativity, motivation, persistence and leadership ability should be given more weight, the business leaders said. --Sharon Coar |
