The university will hold a candlelight memorial service April 30 to remember 28 students, faculty and staff members who have died since last May.
The service will be at 7:30 p.m. in front of the Chapel, or inside the Chapel in case of bad weather.
UGA held the first such memorial service last spring following a year in which 28 students, faculty and staff died. The service was so effective in helping people cope with the losses that a decision was made to hold a memorial each year, says Rick Rose, assistant vice president for student affairs.
“This service brings the university community together to honor the lives of those who were dear to us,” says Rose. “It is a service for comfort and healing, but it is also a time for us to remember with gladness and gratitude the joy and happiness these friends and colleagues brought to our lives and to the university.”
Seventeen students and 11  faculty and staff members have died since last May. Each of their names will be read aloud, and the Chapel bell will toll once for each name. The names will be read by Tunde Ezekiel, president of the Student Government Association; Charles Keith, chair of the University Council Executive Committee; and Sarah Fraker, president of the Staff Council.
People attending the service will be given a candle, and members of the Arch Society, a student leadership group, will move among the audience lighting candles.
University President Michael F. Adams will make brief opening and closing remarks for the service. Southern Wind, a student woodwind group from the School of Music, will play.
