
Mikhail Gorbachev accepts the Delta Prize for Global Understanding
Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the Soviet Union, received the 2001 Delta Prize for Global Understanding at a ceremony in Atlanta April 16. The presentation was made by Leo Mullin of Delta Air Lines and UGA President Michael F. Adams. The Delta Prize was established with a grant from the Delta Air Lines Foundation and is administered by UGAs Center for International Trade and Security and UGAs Center for Humanities and Arts.
On wings of song
Max Reinhart, who is head of the department of Germanic and Slavic languages, wanted to leave something with graduating seniors--something they could take with them for decades to come. So he designed a new course, one that teaches students the enduring poetry of Goethe, Eichendorff, Heine and Moerike, along with the beloved musical settings by Schubert, Schumann and Wolf.
The resulting collaboration with the School of Music has students soaring on wings of song.

Gwinnett University Center CEO
to speak at Graduate School Commencement
James Muyskens, chief executive officer of the Gwinnett University Center, will be the speaker at commencement for graduate students at the University of Georgia May 12.
The ceremony, at 2:30 p.m. in Stegeman Coliseum, is for candidates for masters, doctoral and specialist degrees. An estimated 900 students are eligible to receive graduate degrees.
University Council takes up
lengthy agenda at final meeting
University Council faces a protracted and possibly spirited meeting April 26 when it takes up a lengthy agenda featuring such potentially controversial items as a new date for fall break in 2002, a proposed campus memorial for military casualties, and a new College of Environment and Design.
Service planned for deceased
UGA faculty, staff, students
The university will hold a candlelight memorial service April 30 to remember 28 students, faculty and staff members who have died since last May. The service will be at 7:30 p.m. in front of the Chapel, or inside the Chapel in case of bad weather.
BTE observes its 25th anniversary by evoking the spirit of Malcolm X
The 10 members of UGAs Black Theatrical Ensemble marked the groups 25th anniversary at the end of March by calling on the spirit of Malcolm X.
Larry Calhoun, then a graduate student in mass communications, founded the Black Theatrical Ensemble in 1976 to promote diversity in Athens theater.
