MIT to launch course database
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology plans to make the course materials for 500 classes available on the Web within the next two years. Visitors to the Web site known as OpenCourseWare will be able to review lecture notes, syllabuses and assignments for a variety of classes. Students will not be able to earn credit on the Web site. By the end of the decade, school officials plan to have information concerning 2,000 courses available on this Web site.

Regents name new presidents
John Randolph Pierce has been named president of Floyd College, in Rome, by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents and Chancellor Stephen R. Portch. Pierce currently serves as the provost of the Lawrenceville campus of Georgia Perimeter College.
Michael F. Vollmer was named president of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton. He is currently the executive director of the Office of Education Accountability for Georgia. Pierce will take office on June 15, while Vollmer’s presidency will be effective on July 1.
