Repeated success

Researchers at UGA last month announced a technique which may dramatically improve the success rate of cattle cloning, and displayed eight cloned cattle, ranging in age from two months to four months, as evidence of their success.
As little as two years ago, the highest rate of success for cloning attempts was one in 20; the new technique has a success rate of one in seven, almost three times as high.



New program supports summer research
by undergraduate students


Nineteen current University of Georgia students are taking advantage of a new program funded by the provost’s office that allows them to spend their summer working on specific research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor.



Georgia Review business manager is elected new president of Staff Council

Brenda Keen, business manager for the Georgia Review, is the new president of Staff Council.
Keen, who served as council secretary for three years and as coordinator for the past year, was elected at the June council meeting. She will hold the office for the next year.

Conference looks at ‘Power of Latinos for a Stronger Georgia’


The rapid growth of Georgia’s Hispanic population over the past decade has influenced nearly every aspect of daily life. “The Power of Latinos for a Stronger Georgia,” a major conference at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education July 30 and 31, will bring together experts to examine where the state stands and how best to serve the Latino population in the future.



Nicole Mitchell named
director of press


Nicole Mitchell, currently director of the University of Alabama Press, has been named the new director of the University of Georgia Press, pending approval of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. She succeeds Karen Orchard, who is retiring after 28 years with the press.



Congressman John Linder to deliver summer Commencement address


U.S. Rep. John Linder will speak at UGA’s summer semester Commencement Aug. 4 at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum.
Linder, who represents Georgia’s 11th Congressional District, which includes Athens, will speak in a combined ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students who complete degree requirements at the end of summer semester.
