Parking restrictions
The UGA community is asked to observe the signs in the parking lots around the residence halls and along Finley and Church streets adjacent to the high-rise residence halls while students are moving in, from noon Aug. 10 through 5 p.m. Aug. 17. One-hour move-in parking permits will be available; violators will be towed. For more information, call 542-1421.

Conversational Spanish
The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach is once again sponsoring classes in conversational Spanish, for faculty only, during fall semester.
Enrollment is now open, on a first-come first-served basis. To sign up, call Jackie Roberts at 542-7887. Enrollment is limited to 20 persons per class. The $30 registration fee is due before classes begin Aug. 16. The beginner-level course will be Monday-Wednesday-Friday, 12:20-1:10 p.m., in 404 journalism building. The advanced course will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30-1:45 p.m., in 404-A journalism building.

Electronic reserves
The reserve desk at the main and science libraries is adding a new service for faculty and students beginning fall semester: electronic reserves. E-reserves are materials such as articles and class notes that are available as full-text files; students will be able to access them online and print them. With e-reserves students can download and print many reserve items from their home or computer lab at their convenience.
The reserve desk will continue to keep a copy of the material as traditional paper reserves, for students who prefer to access material this way. Reserve lists with e-items are available through the GIL library catalog. If an item is available to download, the notice “full text online” will display at the bottom of the item record. For reasons of copyright, these documents are password-protected. To access a document, the student clicks on the link and enters the password (provided by the course instructor).
For more information, contact the reserve desk (main library: 542-3256, mainresv@uga.edu; science library: 542-4535, sciresv@uga.edu).

Space proposals
Planning is under way for the Paul D. Coverdell Building for the Biomedical and Health Sciences. A Request for Proposals to occupy space in the facility has been circulated, with a deadline of Sept. 1. Faculty and program directors interested in submitting a proposal should contact their department head or dean.

Steam shut-off
Steam service to North Campus buildings has been shut off until Aug. 8 to allow final connections to a new steam line for the Student Learning Center. Some buildings will be cooler than normal (those with reheat systems) and some (Fine Arts) will have no air conditioning. No hot water is available in restrooms. Buildings affected include the Holmes-Hunter Academic Building, Phi Kappa Hall, Demosthenian Hall, the Chapel, Moore College, Meigs Hall, Terrell Hall, the administration building, Bishop House, the visual arts building, Lustrat House, Waddell Hall, Peabody Hall, LeConte Hall, the main library, Baldwin Hall, Park Hall, Joe Brown Hall, Brooks Hall, Sanford Hall, Denmark Hall, Caldwell Hall, the law school complex, Dean Rusk Hall, Gilbert Hall, the Fine Arts Building, the military building, New College and Old College.

Master Gardener classes
Master Gardener classes will be held at the State Botanical Garden beginning Jan. 8 and ending March 21 next year, from 8:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. Cost is $100.
Space is limited, and students will be selected through an application process. Applications must be submitted by Nov. 1. The application form may be requested by phone (542-6195) or on the Web (www.arches.uga.edu/~klduke/).
The 22-session program covers horticultural principles and practices and pest management. Topics range from soils and nutrition to vegetable gardening and landscaping. Participants must pass a final exam and agree to return 50 hours of volunteer service to their communities during 2002--answering questions in an Extension office, helping conduct gardening clinics, working on community beautification projects, assisting at the State Botanical Garden.
The Master Gardener Program is administered by UGA’s Cooperative Extension Service; in the Athens area it is sponsored by the State Botanical Garden.

Volunteers needed
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic is seeking volunteers to record textbooks on tape for print-disabled students. Volunteers are asked to contribute 90 minutes a week on a regular basis.
For more information, contact Gail Smith, 549-1953, gsmith@rfbd.org.
