The Export GA/Export AG program organized by Charles Boyanton, public service associate in Business Outreach Services, received the 2001 Program Excellence Award from the North American Small Business International Trade Educators. Criteria for selection included uniqueness, success in meeting clearly identified objectives, strength and quality of program, impact, benefits to program participants and strategic alliances and partnerships formed.
Jeff Lewis, director of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, received an American Eagle award from the Georgia Society, Colonial Dames XVII Century. The award was presented in recognition of preserving the state of Georgias history and agricultural accomplishments through the Heritage Garden at the State Botanical Garden.
Leonard E. Mortenson, retired adjunct Callaway Professor of Biochemistry, received an honorary doctor of science degree from Purdue University.

Mortenson is internationally renowned for his discovery of ferredoxin and for his research in the biochemistry of biological nitrogen fixation. He is especially noted for his studies of nitrogenase, the essential enzyme that reduces atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia. Mortenson was a pioneer in the identification, purification and characterization of other metal-sulfur proteins, including ferredoxin and hydrogenase.
Edwin Aurelio Risler, an assistant professor in the School of Social Work, was sworn in by Gov. Roy Barnes at the State Capitol as a member of the state of Georgias Board of Juvenile Justice. Rislers appointment expires July 6, 2005.
The mission of the Department of Juvenile Justice is to provide supervision, detention and a wide range of treatment and educational services for youths referred to the department by the juvenile courts and to provide assistance or delinquency prevention services for at-risk youths through collaborative efforts with

other public, private and community entities.
Fausto O. Sarmiento, assistant professor of geography and co-director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, received an Outstanding Recent Accomplishment Award from the Mountain Geography Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers.
The award recognizes Sarmientos research work in fostering sustainable development in mountain environments around the world. The MGSG-AAG presented the plaque during the 97th annual meeting of the AAG.
Sarmientos participation in international organizations, scientific committees and advisory boards for the International Year of the Mountains has helped to bring attention to the comparative montology of tropical and temperate ecoregions.
