Worth repeating
U.S. Rep. John Linder, who represents Georgias 11th Congressional District (which includes Athens), addressed the graduates at this summers Commencement ceremony Aug. 4. Some highlights:
After seven years of college and several different businesses myself--as well as being in elected office for a quarter of a century--[this] remains the single best lesson I have ever learned. Too many of us are looking up lifes ladder, plotting how to get to the top rung. Let me give you a secret. You take them one rung at a time. Never look up, look at the rung youre on, do your best. Youll be amazed at how it will simplify your life and how quickly youll climb.
In politics its easy to spot the climbers. Theyre the ones who, when they shake your hand, are looking over your shoulder to see if theres somebody more important they should be talking to. I remember meeting Sen. Hubert Humphrey when I was in college. He was already famous and soon to be vice president. When he spoke to me for that short time, I thought I was the only person in the room. Think about that as you start meeting other people. Just for that moment, let that person in front of you be the most important person in your life.
