Rise in college enrollment predicted
The U.S. Department of Education, in its Projections of Education Statistics to 2011 report released Aug. 16, predicts that U.S. college and university enrollments will increase 2 percent this year over last year.
College enrollments, rising for the fourth year in a row, are projected to grow from just under 15 million last fall to 15.3 million this fall. They also are expected to rise every year in the next decade and reach 17.7 million in 2011.
Women, now 56 percent of college students, are expected to make up 58 percent of the student population by 2011.
Research fund sues over stem cells
The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, affiliated with the University of Wisconsin at Madison, has filed a lawsuit seeking to guarantee access to embryonic stem cells developed at the university.
The suit asserts that Geron Corporation, a California biotechnology company that has financed embryonic stem-cell research at the institution, is improperly trying to extend its licensing agreement, which could limit access to certain types of stem cells.
Geron, which already has rights to develop six varieties of cells from stem-cell colonies at the university, is hoping to gain exclusive rights to developing 12 more types of cells.
