Karen Watkins, professor of adult education, has been named director of the College of Educations School of Leadership and Lifelong Learning. She had served as interim director of the school for the past several months. Dr. Watkinss performance has been exemplary, says Dean Louis A. Castenell Jr. Her strong national reputation will be of benefit to the school and college as we continue to develop into a leading College of Education. This past fall, Watkins was selected as a Distinguished Graduate by the University of Texas College of Education in recognition of her success in a number of major leadership roles and responsibilities. Watkins has also directed graduate programs in human resource and organizational development at UGA. She was named the 1998 Outstanding Scholar of the Year by the Academy of Human Resource Development, which cited her for significant contributions to the field of human resource development, including her work on organizational and workplace learning. She was lauded for providing the field with a research-based set of theories and practices that have influenced how HRD professionals think about and study learning in organizations.
