Gary W. Barrett, Odum Professor of Ecology, received the 2001 Distinguished Landscape Ecologist Award from the U.S. chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology.
Given for distinguished scientific contributions to the field of landscape ecology, the award recognizes outstanding achievement over a period of 10 or more years.
Among the accomplishments for which Barrett was honored are serving as ecology program director with the National Science Foundation from 1981 to 1983; representing the U.S. Working Group of Agroecosystems, 1987-1990; co-chairing the fifth annual US-IALE landscape ecology meeting in 1990; publishing numerous book chapters and scholarly articles and receiving grants in the areas of landscape ecology, agro-landscape ecology and mammalian population dynamics at the landscape scale; and writing the 1999 book Landscape Ecology of Small Mammals with John D. Peles.

Dorinda G. Dallmeyer, associate director of the Dean Rusk Center for International, Comparative and Graduate Legal Studies, has been elected vice president of the American Society of International Law.
The American Society of International Law, founded in 1906 by U.S. Secretary of State Elihu Root, is one of the worlds leading associations in international law, with a membership of more than 4,300 professors, practitioners, civil servants and students from more than 100 countries. Its purpose is to educate and engage the public in international law and to expand its frontiers as a vehicle for resolving disputes and international conflict.
Thomas Whigham, professor of history, presented a paper at the Mercosul/Merosur: The Market and Beyond conference. Held at the University of Texas, the conference addressed the Mercosul agreement (South Americas version of NAFTA) and was attended by representatives of every Mercosul country, including ambassadors of Argentina and Brazil. Whighams paper was entitled The Paraguayan War: A Catalyst for Nationalism in South America.

Anitra Yusinski, acting assistant director of judicial programs, received the 2001 New Professional Award from Commission XV of the American College Personnel Association.
The recipient of the New Professional of the Year Award is determined on the basis of an individuals distinguishing himself or herself both in the field of student personnel and as a member of the commission. Eligible nominees are judged on contributions to the field of campus legal issues and judicial affairs as well as to the commission.
ACPA serves all levels of higher education student affairs professionals through educational and developmental programs, publications and networking opportunities to enable these educators to excel in their positions, to achieve career growth and to contribute to the profession.
Kudos recognizes special contributions of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service. News items are limited to election into office of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments.
