UGA climbs again in ranking of national public universities

The University of Georgia rose two spots in U.S. News and World Report’s 2002 ranking of the “Top 50 Public National

Universities—Doctoral” and is now ranked 18th. UGA was tied for 20th in the 2001 rankings.
“This is a significant move for us,” says President Michael F. Adams. “All the trend lines at the University of Georgia are good, and this ranking reflects that positive trend. I have often said that if we carry out our mission well, the rankings will follow.”
Adams also notes that only three other states—California, Texas and Virginia—have more than one school listed in the top 20. “Georgians should be proud to have two universities so highly regarded as the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech,” he says.
UGA is also ranked 21st on the list of “Great Schools at Great Prices” and is the fourth highest ranked public institution on that list and the fourth highest Southern school.
U.S. News calculates this ranking by relating each school’s academic quality to the net cost of attending. “We believe that families will find the most significant values among colleges that are above average academically,” the editors write.
The Terry College of Business is tied for 30th on the list of “Best Business Programs” and its insurance/risk management program is ranked fifth in the nation.
U.S. News and World Report ranked 249 national universities with doctoral programs, the category that includes the University of Georgia, in two separate lists. One ranking includes all the institutions, public and private, and shows UGA in the “second tier.” The other, on which UGA ranks 18th, includes only the publics.
UGA was ranked 20th among public universities in 2001, 22nd in 2000 and 26th in 1999.
