Scholar Schalom Ben-Chorin wrote some 30 books in German on Jewish historical and cultural themes, of which Brother Jesus was his acknowledged favorite. UGA professors Jared Klein and Max Reinhart have translated the book into English.
Brother Jesus, according to Klein and Reinhart, is unique because it is addressed primarily to Christians. It focuses exclusively on Jesus the man, illuminating his life and mission against the background of Jewish tradition. For Ben-Chorin, who emigrated to Jerusalem in 1935 and lived there until his death in 1999, Jesus was a Jewish brother.
Ben-Chorins work is best described as a conversation with the reader, complete with personal recollections and meaningful digressions, the translators write in the books preface. The emotional turmoil that Jesus must have experienced when his impending fate became clear to him is depicted with a psychological penetration and a flair for the dramatic . . . will linger with readers long after the last page has been turned.
