Worth repeating
The new Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory building was officially dedicated Aug. 31, in a ceremony that was followed by tours of the $6 million facility. Keith W. Prasse, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, reviewed the role of the laboratory. He concluded:
The Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory opened on July 1, 1972, and it opened with one employeethe director, Dr. Ed Holsingerand they gave him a desk and closed off a hall in the basement of the main building here, and they gave him access to the autopsy room. And that was the beginning of the Athens Diagnostic Laboratory. . . .
Shortly the workload grew, and the staff grew, and they moved the diagnostic laboratory from the end of the hallway into a house trailer. For many years they worked in a house trailer parked behind this building, and then another building became opena building that was condemned because it was no longer appropriate for the housing of laboratory animalsand they moved the diagnostic laboratory into it. . . . Our people worked in that building until April of this year. And in April of this year they entered this marvelous state-of-the-art laboratory behind this building. . . .
The College of Veterinary Medicine, through its provision of animal health-care services, is, for many people, the only touchpoint between the taxpayers of Georgia and the . . . expertise within this university. . . . The Athens and the Tifton laboratories have approximately 100,000 accessions, or cases, that they provide service for on an annual basis. They annually touch people in all 159 of the counties of the state of Georgia. . . . So they play a critical role and a vital role for our state and region.
