Jacksonville State University fields first female Division I football player
Ashley Martin has become the first woman to play Division I football. The junior, who usually plays for Jacksonville State Universitys womens soccer team, recently was named the Southland Football Leagues special-teams player of the week.
Allowing women to play football has been an issue under legal scrutiny for many years. The current rules allow women to try out for contact sports but require those who make the team to be subject to the same rules as the men. Martin continues to practice with both the soccer team and the football team and hopes to work something out with her coaches to continue with both sports.
Emory, former prof settle lawsuit
James J. Murtagh, a professor who claimed he was banned from Emory Universitys campus after reporting an alleged misuse of federal funds, has settled his lawsuit against the university and its teaching hospital.
Murtagh was ordered off campus by the university and told to undergo a psychiatric examination to determine if he was fit to return to work. His claim that he was being unfairly punished by the university was denied by administrators at Emory. Murtagh continued to receive full pay and benefits after being ordered off campus. The terms of the settlement were not announced, and both sides are prohibited from discussing the matter.
