Scholarships for victims families
Many colleges and universities around the nation have announced new scholarships to be awarded to dependents of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Schools located near the World Trade Center began this trend with the announcement that victims spouses and children would be able to attend public colleges in New York for free.
Rutgers University plans to pay the tuition of dependent children of victims from New Jersey. New York University, Columbia University and Fordham University were among other schools in the area that announced intentions of establishing scholarships and financial aid to these students. Polytechnic University, in Brooklyn, has established a memorial scholarship fund for dependents of missing or killed fire and police personnel. Long Island University is providing scholarships for current students whose parents or spouses were killed, as well as creating scholarships named after current students who were victims.
Institutions outside of the New York area have followed suit, offering financial assistance to the family members of those killed or permanently disabled in the attacks.
