Derrick P. Alridge, assistant professor in social foundations of education, has been awarded a National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship for the 2001-2002 academic year.
The $50,000 award is granted annually to scholars to pursue critical education research projects. As a fellow, Alridge will work on an ongoing intellectual history project that examines the educational thought of W.E.B. Du Bois, an African-American historian and sociologist who pioneered research on the black experience in the United States.
Senior Associate Athletics Director Claude Felton was one of three individuals inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame this year.
During his career Felton has served as media coordinator for 17 NCAA national championship events and was the host sports information director for the 1977 NCAA Final Four basketball tournament in Atlanta. He was a member of the press liaison staff for the U.S. Olympic Committee at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and was the press venue chief for soccer at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. He also served as chairman of the Ethics Committee of the College Sports Information Directors of America from 1985 to 1991 and chairman of the CoSIDA Olympic Liaison Committee (1992-1995).
Felton currently serves as a member of the NCAA mens basketball Final Four media coordination committee.
Michael Ferrara, director of the athletic training program and an associate professor in exercise science, received the 2001 Sayers Bud Miller Distinguished Educator Award from the National Athletic Trainers Association.
The award recognizes individuals who exemplify excellence in the field of athletic training education. It is the highest honor NATA bestows on athletic training educators.
Paul M. Kurtz, associate dean of the School of Law, has been appointed by Gov. Roy E. Barnes as a commissioner to represent the state of Georgia on the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. Kurtz succeeds another UGA law faculty member, A. Gus Cleveland Professor C. Ronald Ellington, as a commissioner.
The NCCUSL is a non-profit organization whose 300 members review state laws and determine which areas of law should be uniform. The commissioners draft specific acts and recommend acts to state legislators. While some commissioners also serve as state legislators, the majority of members are practitioners, judges and law professors, and all of them are members of the bar.
Kudos recognizes special contributions of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service. News items are limited to election into office of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments. |
