terrorist attacks, has led to the first mid-year state budget reduction since the economic downturn of fall 1991. Gov. Roy E. Barnes called Oct. 1 for a 2.5 percent reduction in the current fiscal year budget, annualized to a 5 percent reduction for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2002.
State funding comprises 41 percent of the University of Georgias overall annual budget. Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration Henry M. Huckaby estimates that the cuts may cost UGA some $10 million in fiscal year 2002 and $20 million in fiscal year 2003.

Federal, state laws cover university employees called to military service
As of last week, the Human Resources Office did not know officially of any university employee who had been called to active military duty as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. But theres a good chance faculty or staff who are in the reserves or National Guard will be called as the nation gears up for an expected lengthy fight against terrorism.
If so, they will be covered by federal and state laws that govern leave, pay and re-employment for people called into military service. The Human Resources Division administers the regulations for the university.
