Two UGA researchers have been awarded funding under the U.S.-Brazil Higher Education Consortia Program, which promotes institutional cooperation and student mobility between the United States and Brazil. Of 10 grant recipients, UGA is the only institution to receive funding for two projects. Nearly $400,000 over four years will be provided for the projects, which explore agroecology and animal health, trade and food security.
UGAs Edward Kanemasu, director of international agriculture, joins with Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco for a project that will teach students to make educated choices based on long-term benefit to both agriculture and the environment. Iowa State University and Universidade Federal do Pará serve as partner institutions. Agroecology focuses on the complex relationships between the environment and production of agricultural commodities like cultivated plants, native vegetation, and livestock.
A second project under the direction of Corrie Brown, UGA professor of veterinary medicine, will prepare veterinarians to deal with global issues in animal health, trade and food security. UGA and Universidade Federal de Santa Maria will lead the project, with Texas A&M University and Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais serving as partners.
The U.S.-Brazil Higher Education Consortia Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Educations Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. |
