Middle East meetings postponed
Throughout the Middle East, international educational meetings scheduled for this fall are being called off.
A Washington-based non-profit organization postponed a higher-education summit designed to bring together academics and government officials from around the Arab world and the United States to discuss the effect of globalization on higher education in the region. In Damascus, the American Embassy postponed a workshop on private higher education in Syria this past weekend. The workshop would have brought together 11 delegations from American universities interested in establishing partnerships with Syrian universities.
High schoolers not ready for college
In a report issued late last month, the National Commission on the High-School Senior Year said U.S. high schools are not adequately preparing enough students for college. Raising Our Sights: No High School Senior Left Behind calls for the comprehensive restructuring of high-school curriculums and a closer alignment of high school curriculums and graduation requirements with those of colleges.
