New Year--New Memories is the theme of this years celebration, sponsored by the student-led All-Campus Homecoming Committee and the student activities department.
We chose the theme in the hope that all the students, faculty, staff and alumni will feel the spirit that comes with being a Georgia Bulldog, says Sarah Heath, chair of the committee.
Highlights of this years celebration include what has become an annual Homecoming appearance by hypnotist/comedian Tom Deluca, the Homecoming Parade through downtown Athens, a concert featuring the Black Crowes, and the crowning of Mr. and Ms. Homecoming during halftime of the Georgia-Kentucky football game.
A number of UGAs schools and colleges will hold reunions and social events to mark Homecoming.
The week began Oct. 14 with a Homecoming tradition--students armed with paint descending at midnight on the portion of Sanford Drive between Memorial Hall and the Tate Student Center for street painting.
A Homecoming Kickoff will be held Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tate Plaza. Varsity athletes and mascot Hairy Dog will be present, radio station 95.5--The Beat--will provide music, and there will be interactive games and free pizza.
Deluca, who has performed at Homecoming for the past several years, will appear Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. at the Ramsey Student Center.
On Oct. 16, a beach bash will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on the lawn at Russell and Brumby halls. Events include games and free food from Athens restaurants.
Showcase UGA, on Oct. 17, 5-9 p.m. at Legion Field, will give amateur entertainers a chance to show their stuff. Musicians, comedians, magicians, dancers and actors will perform.
The UGA Alumni Association will hold its annual Workin Like a Dawg party Oct. 18 for university employees who are alumni. The event, 4-6 p.m. at the Wray-Nicholson House, will include ice cream and other food and special guest appearances.
The Redcoat Band will lead the Homecoming Parade through downtown Oct. 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Larry Munson, the voice of the Bulldogs, and Rodney Bennett, UGAs new dean of students, will be grand marshals. In addition to the usual floats and cars with UGA athletes and local dignitaries, the Homecoming committee is encouraging people to join the parade by riding golf carts, tricycles, lawn mowers and mopeds, and pushing strollers.
The Black Crowes, described by an industry magazine as the most rock n roll rock n roll band in the world, will perform in Stegeman Coliseum Oct. 19 at 9 p.m. Known for its distinctive sound--a fusion of blues and Southern rock--and nose-thumbing attitude toward corporate sponsorship, the band has produced a string of top-selling singles and albums since it was formed in 1984 in Atlanta. Tickets are on sale at the Tate Student Center cashiers window.
Students will cast votes throughout the week on the OASIS computer system for Mr. and Ms. Homecoming. Five women and five men representing campus organizations are vying for the title. The winners will be announced during halftime of the Georgia-Kentucky football game, which begins at 12:30 p.m. in Sanford Stadium.
The Alumni Association will host a pre-game reception in Memorial Hall beginning at 11 a.m.
