Wesleyan College given $15 million
Two anonymous donors have given Wesleyan College in Macon $15 million--the largest contribution in the history of the private school for women.
The donors presented the gift as a challenge to alumni, corporations, foundations, and others close to Wesleyan to contribute to the schools endowment, which has hovered between $45 million and $48 million. The colleges goal is to increase the endowment to $100 million.
Founded in 1836, Wesleyan is a four-year liberals arts college. This fall, 721 women are enrolled.
W. Virginia college cuts tuition
Bethany College, a private liberal-arts institution in West Virginia has announced it will cut tuition by 42 percent--from $20,650 to $12,000--next fall. Nearly 75 percent of Bethanys students come from West Virginia, Ohio, or Pennsylvania. The colleges president said the cut is largely in response to the regions weakened economy.
To help make up for the lower tuition, Bethany plans to increase the size of its next freshman class by 14 percent, from this years total of 220 students to 257.
