TIME IN CURRENT POSITION:
Eight years.

JOB DESCRIPTION: “I advise freshmen and sophomores in the College of Arts and Sciences--specifically bachelor of arts students in humanities.”

A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK: “I probably see seven to 10 students who have appointments. We’ll talk about classes for the next semester and other issues that come up--choosing a major, issues they’re having in their lives. I’ll also get e-mails and calls from students--and occasionally their parents.
“I also do some administrative work. Right now I am on a committee working on a booklet about Franklin College and about being a liberal arts major.”

THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF MY JOB: “The sheer volume of information that we have to deal with because things change all the time.”

THE MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB:
“When I can connect with a student on a deeper level than discussing things like what classes you should take next.
“I like when students come in very excited about a course but are not sure how to work it into their academic curriculum.”

OTHER WORK EXPERIENCES: “I was an academic adviser at Albany State University and before that at Georgia Southern.”

IF I WERE NOT DOING THIS JOB, I WOULD MOST LIKE TO: “I am a short-story writer, and I’ve published two books of poems. I would be happy being a full-time writer, and I would also like to garden.”

OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS:
“Writing and gardening. I have two daughters--family is important to me. I also am getting more involved in church. My rector and I do poetry appreciation workshops together.”

FAVORITE MUSIC: “I listen to a lot of jazz--Joe Williams and Ella Fitzgerald. I also like classical music, especially Mozart. I like a lot of contemporary music and what people might call “old rock’.”

A BOOK I WOULD RECOMMEND TO OTHERS: “Everybody on the planet should have to read Mary Oliver. She’s a Pulitzer-Prize winning poet who writes about the natural world.”

THE PEOPLE I MOST ADMIRE:
“Jubilee Partners. They live a life of poverty and work with refugees from all over the world. They cut through all the political rhetoric and go directly to helping people in need. They take risks to help people.”

THE ISSUE THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAY’S WORLD: “The aftermath of Sept. 11. I’m very concerned about the prospects of terrorism but I don’t really think that’s a new issue.
“I am concerned about what effect it’s going to have on the country in terms of how we look at one another, how we look at the rest of the world and what will happen to people with differing views.”
