Michael Floyd
Michael Floyd
J. Michael Floyd, director of Food Service Administration, has been recognized by Food Management magazine with one of its five national leadership awards. The Food Management Leadership Awards recognize industry pace setters who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in their fields and standard-setting results in their organizations.
The magazine cites Floyd as “the brains behind the department’s successful and award-winning marketing programs, which have boosted seven-day meal plan enrollment 350 percent over the past 10 years.”

Jerry L. Hargis, former director of educational programs for the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, received the Nofflet Williams Service Award from the National University Telecommunications Network. A founding member of NUTN, Hargis served on the organization’s advisory board since its inception in 1982.
The Nofflet Williams Service Award “recognizes an individual who exhibits, over a sustained period and in a consistent manner, the commitment to provide service to professionals in the field. Since NUTN’s central core is to provide service in the exchange of experience, practice and theory to all in the organization in a free manner, this award is doubly significant.”

Genetics professor Sidney R. Kushner has been elected to fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology. Kushner’s research focuses, in part, on the roles that DNA repair and recombination play in nucleic acid metabolism with E. coli.
Academy fellows are selected by their peers based on their contributions to microbiology, scientific achievement and leadership.
William Potter

University Librarian William Gray Potter received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from his alma mater Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where he gave the commencement address. He also received the Distinguished Alumni Award, given each year by the SIUE Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to society by an SIUE graduate. Potter earned a bachelor’s in English in 1973 from SIUE.

James O. Wheeler, Merle Prunty Jr. Professor Emeritus of Geography, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers.
Wheeler served eight years as head of the geography department before being named Merle Prunty Jr. Professor of Geography in 1985. He retired in 1999.
Wheeler’s articles and conference presentations number more than 100 in each category. He has authored or co-authored six books, co-edited two others, and contributed 13 book chapters and more than 30 book reviews. He is the founding co-editor of the journal Urban Geography and is the longest-serving editor of Southeastern Geographer, with a term that began in 1992 and presently continues.

Kudos recognizes special contributions of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service. News items are limited to election into office of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments.
