Engineering open forum

CURO abstracts
The Undergraduate Research Symposium sponsored by the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities will take place April 15-16, 2002, in the Tate Student Center. The symposium provides a forum for undergraduates to present original research sponsored by faculty members. Undergraduate students from all disciplines are encouraged to participate.
Presentations may be in the form of a paper, oral presentation, poster session, exhibition, performance or art work.
Those who wish to present their work should submit an application, an abstract (250 words or less) and a brief supporting letter from the sponsoring faculty member no later than Jan. 25, 2002. The application is available on the Web at www.uga.edu/honors/curo/index.html. All proposal abstracts will receive student peer review with faculty guidance. Although CURO is part of the Honors Program, participation is not limited to Honors students.
Selection of participants will be based on originality and quality of the work and extensive involvement of the undergraduate student in the development of the research design and execution of the project.
Sponsoring faculty will be invited to preside at their students sessions, and accepted abstracts will be published in a book of abstracts. Research abstracts for the CURO 2000 and 2001 symposia are archived on the CURO Web site. Papers submitted by March 1, 2002, will be considered for best paper awards in the humanities, sciences and social sciences.
Students who participate in the CURO symposium are also encouraged to submit abstracts to be considered for the National Conference of Undergraduate Research, to be held this year at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, on April 25-27, 2002. The Honors program selects students with outstanding research projects to travel with Honors staff to the NCUR conference to present their work alongside some of the premier undergraduate researchers in the country.
The CURO symposium will be free and open to the public, and faculty and students are encouraged to attend. This year, Steven Stice, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar and professor in the department of animal and dairy science will present the keynote address, entitled A View from the Lab: Scientific Potential and Ethical Restraint in Cloning and Stem Cell Research. Stice is engaged in stem cell and animal cloning research and currently serves as chief scientific officer for ProLinia and as vice president for human stem cell research at BresaGen Inc.
Applications, abstracts, and faculty letters of support should be sent to Pamela B. Kleiber, Honors Program, Moore College. For further information, contact CURO@uga.edu or 542-0530.
