Student-visa system under review
President George W. Bush recently ordered a review of the nations student-visa system. This review falls under his plan to revamp immigration policies and make it more difficult for terrorists to enter the United States.
The goal of the review is not to keep international students from studying in the United States, but rather to prohibit the education of foreign nationals who would use their knowledge against the country. Student visas have come under scrutiny as immigration officials reported that as many as two of the hijackers in the Sept. 11 attacks entered the country on a student visa.
ROTC drawing more student interest
Recently, growing numbers of students have shown interest in joining the Reserve Officer Training Corps. Many officials agree that the Sept. 11 attacks prompted the immediate interest in ROTC. However, enrollment has increased steadily over the past 12 months, and it is still too soon to measure the effects of the attacks on enrollment.
ROTC was established in 1926 to bring more highly educated men into the armed forces. Participation has gradually declined until recently. The number of ROTC programs fell to 270 in 2000 from a high of 413 in 1990.
