Regents name chancellor-designate
Board of Regents Chairman Hilton H. Howell Jr. announced Oct. 25 that Thomas C. Meredith, chancellor of the University of Alabama System in Tuscaloosa, has been named chancellor of the University System of Georgia, effective Jan. 2.
We are tremendously pleased with the outcome of our national search, Howell said. Dr. Meredith emerged from the selection process with the right blend of experience, vision and personality that the board felt would best suit our current needs and future plans. He is the right man, for the right job, at the right time, and we are looking forward to the leadership that he will bring to the chancellors post.
I have known Tom Meredith for many years, said UGA President Michael F. Adams. He is a person of complete integrity. His experiences in other southern states will be a tremendous benefit to Georgia. I believe the regents have made a good choice, and I look forward to working with him.
Meredith has served as the chief executive officer of the University System of Alabama since June 1997. In that capacity, he is responsible for three doctoral research universities, which have a combined enrollment of 40,000 students,
17,000 employees, and an annual budget of $1.8 billion.
Terrys techno-M.B.A. program ranks high
The Terry College of Business has one of the nations top 25 techno-M.B.A. programs, according to the results of an annual survey announced by Computerworld magazine.
The survey, published in Computerworlds Oct. 22 issue, asked campus recruiters nationwide to nominate the M.B.A. programs with concentrations on technology that they felt produced the best graduates. The survey also asked the business schools themselves to nominate the best techno-M.B.A. programs in the country.
According to the article accompanying the survey results, the goal of the survey was to identify schools that do the best job of combining good management techniques and technology innovation under the general heading of sound business practices.
Its very satisfying. We consistently get rated very high in surveys, says Melvin Crask, director of the Terry Colleges M.B.A. programs. We have a very strong management information systems department.
Developing management models for emerging technologies is one of three key areas of focus outlined in the Terry Colleges strategic plan, so its not surprising that this emphasis on MIS is paying dividends, according to Crask. This confirms the strength we have there, he says.
Computerworld reported that 89 percent of the Terry Colleges M.B.A. graduates in 2000 accepted a job within six months of getting their degrees, at an average annual starting salary of $72,300.
Computerworld is a weekly print and online publication targeting IT professionals and managers.
Stadium construction project begins
Due to the rescheduling of the football game against the University of Houston from Sept. 15 to Dec. 1, construction on a project to improve the Gate 6 (East Campus Road) area of Sanford Stadium will begin prior to the end of the season.
Site preparation work has begun behind the east end of the stadium, according to UGA Athletic Association officials. The season was originally scheduled to end Nov. 10 with the Auburn game. However, rescheduling the Houston game now extends the home season until Dec. 1. Beginning preliminary work in the Gate 6 area will enable the construction to remain on schedule.
The project is designed to enhance the east entrance to the stadium, which has been the area of significant crowd congestion in recent years. The project is scheduled to be completed before the first game of the 2002 season.
