Holidays for calendar year 2002 announced
The university cabinet at its meeting Oct. 23 adopted the official schedule of faculty and staff holidays for calendar year 2002, one which adds Memorial Day and does not include Christmas Eve.
The state and regents authorize 12 holidays per year but allow individual institutions to set their own schedule. To maintain instructional continuity and to meet a minimum number of class days and hours each semester, the university traditionally has observed a limited number of major holidays through the year, reserving the bulk of the dates for the year-end break.
“It’s a can’t-win situation regarding Memorial Day or Christmas Eve,” says Tom Jackson, associate vice president for public affairs. “With no room to maneuver with the other 10 dates, it always seems to come down to one or the other of these two dates, each of which is extremely important to people.”
The cabinet’s decision this year considered the national crisis and the importance of placing priority on honoring those who serve and have served the nation, Jackson adds. Additionally, since the switch to semesters, students already have Memorial Day off from class.
“The assumption is that a large proportion of employees will take annual leave on Christmas Eve and would have done so on whichever of these dates is designated an official work day,” he says.
During cabinet discussion, it was noted that most state agencies and many units of the University System work during the week of Dec. 26-31, but to date the university has chosen to keep those dates as official holidays. Tentative calendars adopted for 2003 and 2004 maintain that pattern, with the university closing for the break at close of business on Dec. 24 each year and observing Memorial Day as a holiday.
