College district rejects flag display
The trustees of West Valley-Mission Community College District in California have decided not to require American flags to be displayed in every classroom of the districts two campuses. The decision came after faculty and students objected to the proposal. By a four-to-three vote, the trustees decided that displaying the flag should be a voluntary action. The approved voluntary plan allows private donors to supply money to buy flags, which could then be hung in classrooms. Those who voted for a mandatory flag display expressed concern that without such a rule, no one would put up flags in classrooms.
Med school applications decline
The number of medical school applications has been declining for five years and the trend continues this year. The countrys 125 accredited medical schools received 6 percent fewer applications than they did last year and 25.8 percent fewer than they received in 1996. School officials say the decline is due to a perception that managed care requires more paperwork and tougher restrictions for physicians.
