Mercer Reynolds
The U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Mercer Reynolds, will be the speaker for the fall semester Commencement Dec. 15.
Reynolds, a former business executive with a background in international affairs, will speak at a combined ceremony for undergraduate, graduate and professional students who complete degree requirements at the end of fall semester. The ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. in Stegeman Coliseum.
The exact number of graduates won’t be known until fall final examinations are over. Preliminary indications are that about 1,700 students will be eligible to participate.
Among Reynolds’s business interests was Reynolds Plantation lake and golf community on Lake Oconee, for which he was chairman and chief executive officer until this year.
A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Reynolds was confirmed on Aug. 1 as U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein and sworn in Aug. 14 by Secretary of State Colin Powell.
After college and a year in the U.S. Army, Reynolds worked 10 years for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Chattanooga. In 1979, he and a business partner, William DeWitt, founded Reynolds, DeWitt and Co., an investment firm, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Reynolds was co-chairman of the company until he stepped down to take the diplomatic post.
Reynolds has been campaign chairman of the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families, which fights pornography and child abuse.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina and an M.B.A. from the University of Tennessee. He has been chairman of the University of North Carolina Educational Foundation and was on the University of Cincinnati executive committee.
