California sets up new Ph.D. program
California State University has joined with the University of California to increase the availability of a joint doctoral degree in education. This agreement ends a long dispute between the two statewide systems.
The immediate result is a 10-member board, evenly divided between the two systems. The board will be responsible for expediting approval of the joint doctorate. Each university system will contribute $2 million over the next two years to help start the program. Diplomas earned under the new program will bear the names of both universities. Plans call for the new doctoral program to be in place by August of 2002.
Fighting terrorism with education
U.S. Secretary of Education Roderick R. Paige told higher education officials earlier this month that education is a key tool in the war against terrorism. Because education represents freedom, Paige said, schools would be actively fighting the war on terrorism by increasing the number of educators. He called for institutions to make college accessible to an increased number of Americans, to better train teachers and to devote more research to the study of education. Lawmakers are scheduled to begin discussing renewal of the Higher Education Act next year.
