Holiday choices to be subject of informal poll by staff governance group

Although the university cabinet has adopted a university calendar for 2002, 2003 and 2004, the Staff Council is conducting an informal poll to help determine whether staff employees would prefer to have Memorial Day or Christmas Eve as a holiday in those years.
The calendar as adopted designates Memorial Day as a holiday and has the university in normal operation on Christmas Eve in those years.
Several Staff Council members said at the council’s November meeting that they would prefer Christmas Eve to be the holiday and Memorial Day to be a work day. They said they believe many staff members share that preference.
University employees receive 12 paid holidays annually. Eleven of those days are New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the following Friday, and Christmas day and four days around Christmas. The 12th day has usually been Christmas Eve, except when Christmas fell on a Saturday or Sunday, which allowed Memorial Day to be the 12th holiday.
Staff Council polled staff employees on the question of Memorial Day versus Christmas Eve several years ago, and the results favored Christmas Eve.
For the current poll, members of Staff Representative Groups in schools, colleges and other administrative units are distributing ballots to staff employees in their units. The ballots offer three choices: Memorial Day, Christmas Eve, or no preference. The results will be reported at the council’s Dec. 5 meeting.
University officials say they expect a large number of employees will take annual leave on whichever day is not the official holiday.
