SHOLON RUCKER
Admissions Counselor
Office of Undergraduate Admissions
TIME IN CURRENT POSITION: Two months.
JOB DESCRIPTION: My main focus is the recruitment of students and also counseling students and parents on admissions issues. Many students are intimidated because UGA is such a large school. They are afraid of becoming a nobody and I tell them that when I came here, I did not know anyone. So I had a choice, either get out and meet people or stay in my room and drown in pity. I chose to get out and explore and now I am able to walk into a room of complete strangers and be at peace. Helping students to conquer the fear of becoming lost in the shuffle is probably the second most important responsibility of my job.
A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK: I like to get in about 15 minutes early and read from the book of Proverbs. Then I return all my phone calls from the previous day I was unable to return. This month Ive been doing a lot of high school visits so Ill prepare my material for those. On days that I am the primary, my core responsibilities are counseling walk-in students, servicing customers on the phone, and giving information sessions.
OTHER UGA EXPERIENCE: During my sophomore year I took a macroeconomics course taught by Dr. Allgood. No matter how hard I tried I always made an 88 on each test. Finally I accepted the fact that I would not make an A in this course. When I received my grading report I noticed that I actually received an A in the course. My professor told me that because I always came to ask questions and attended class regularly, he felt I had earned the A. All I could say was, Wow. This is why I preach to students to never be intimidated by their professors.
OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE: My first job out of school was working as an event manager for the Fun Company. I was able to see a lot of the country while gaining valuable management experience. It was my first experience being in command. I also sold cars, which helps me to deal with difficult people during a counseling session. I also worked for Prudential Relocation in Atlanta before joining UGA.
IF I WERE NOT DOING THIS JOB, I WOULD MOST LIKE TO: My dream job is to be a motivational speaker. If there is a group that needs to be motivated, I want to be there.
FAVORITE MUSIC: I like anything with a nice rhythm, from regular R&B to 80s. I also enjoy jazz and light rock. Going to UGA opened my mind to different types of music. For the most part, I try to give everything a chance.
A BOOK I WOULD RECOMMEND TO OTHERS: Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. It talks about how to deal with change. A lot of people think that things should stay the same but the only thing that is constant is change.
THE PEOPLE I MOST ADMIRE: My parents, Sholon and Betty Rucker. Theyve always been there for me and continue to be there for me. My dad keeps me on fire, and my mom keeps me grounded. Together the two help to maintain balance.
THE ISSUE THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAYS WORLD: People ask why there is so much racial tension in the world. It is because of ignorance. People should concentrate on seeking the truth. They make assumptions about groups but no one wants to find out if these things are true. Nobody wants to learn but everyone wants to act as if they know everything.
Listen to the word of God, which says that people are destroyed because of their lack of knowledge. I suggest we take steps to acquire this knowledge before it is too late. Commit yourself to study, and you will make a difference.
