War brings out the worst in most people. In others, it sometimes brings out the very best. And according to alumnus David Evans, the Civil War is no exception. The Civil War claimed the lives of more Americans than World War I, World War II and the Korean War combined, says Evans, who received his Ph.D. in military history from UGA in 1982. But Billy Yank and Johnny Reb also had a softer side, a surprisingly unselfish, even gentle quality that has largely been ignored, until now.
Edited by Evans, Random Acts of Kindness: True Stories of Americas Civil War is a collection of 99 stories of caring and compassion that took place both on and off the battlefield. Gathered from a variety of printed sources, most of the stories are eyewitness accounts, written by soldiers and civilians on both sides of the conflict. Some stories are told with reverence and gratitude, others with a touch of humor, but all of them pluck at the chords of conscience that gently remind us, according to Evans, that we are our brothers keeper. |
