Position announcement
The newly established School of Public and International Affairs at UGA will offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science, public policy, and international affairs and graduate degrees in public administration. The School will also continue the political science department’s tradition of research in these fields and cooperate with the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and other university units in providing public services to governments, government officials and communities.
The dean will have the opportunity to work with faculty to mold the new School, drawing on the considerable strengths of the current faculty. The dean will be responsible for recruiting, developing and retaining faculty in the School; supporting faculty leadership in curriculum development and teaching; stimulating research; and reinforcing the vision and direction of the School. Reporting to the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, the dean will also be responsible for effectively representing the School to other departments, schools, institutes, centers and colleges on campus; to higher-level administrators at UGA; to government officials in Georgia and elsewhere; to other institutions of higher education in the state, nation and world; to the general public; and to regional, national and international organizations that emphasize public and international affairs education and research. The dean will also be responsible for fund raising, as well as for developing and maintaining partnerships with organizations and agencies with which the School may work on contracts and grants to ensure the broad impact of the educational and research efforts of its students and faculty. The dean will be a member of the Council of Deans and part of the administrative leadership of the university.
The dean should hold the doctorate and a strong record of scholarly accomplishment and recognition that merits appointment as a professor in the new School. The dean should have several years’ experience in higher education, preferably including responsibilities for a strong, research-oriented faculty unit within a large and complex university. The dean should have demonstrated excellence in relating to faculty and others on a university campus and should be enthusiastic about leading faculty to develop creative visions and goals for the new School. Desirable experience includes leadership in government or non-profit organizations; service on advisory committees or task forces related to the public sector, domestic or international; outstanding service as a faculty member or administrator at a public affairs school or college; and demonstrated capability in or knowledge of external fund raising.
Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position becomes available July 1, 2002. UGACard office hours
University IDs are made at the UGACard office in the Tate Student Center. Cost is $7; affinity cards are $10. Photo identification must be provided.
Employees and dependents must be included in the appropriate database before the card can be made; students must complete OASIS registration first. Cards for dependents require submission of a request form at least five working days in advance.
The office is regularly open weekdays, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. It will be closed for semester break Dec. 17-Jan. 1.
