| Joseph Normans Autumn Willow is on display as part of the museums exhibition Impact: New Faculty in the Lamar Dodd School of Art. |
Nine recently arrived faculty members in the Lamar Dodd School of Art will be featured in an exhibition at the Georgia Museum of Art that reflects the universitys efforts to enhance its studio program by bringing in artists with national and international reputations. Impact: New Faculty in the Lamar Dodd School of Art will be on view from Dec. 15 through Feb. 3. Paintings, sculpture, drawings, photography and digital media will fill three galleries at the museum.
Featured in this exhibition are the works of Radcliffe Bailey, Jim Barsness, R.G. Brown, Gretchen Hupfel, Imi Hwangbo, Michael Marshall, Joseph Norman and Michael Oliveri, all of whom have joined UGA in the past three years. Also included in the exhibition is Robert Stackhouse, holder of the Lamar Dodd Chair since 2000.
The stature of these faculty members has an impact that is felt not only by their students but also within the region, building on the strong artist-teacher tradition established by the late Lamar Dodd, founder of the school. Works by the exhibiting artists can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Australian National Gallery, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution and other major public and private collections throughout the world. For some of the artists, Impact will be their introduction to Athens and northeast Georgia, even though most have exhibited in important institutions around the globe.
An opening reception for Impact will be held Dec. 16 from 2 until 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
A second new exhibition, Maps and Arts of the Savannah River Valley, will also be on view from Dec. 15 through Feb. 3. It is presented in conjunction with the first Henry D. Green Symposium of the Decorative Arts, The Savannah River

Valley to 1865: Fine Arts, Architecture, and Decorative Arts, which is scheduled for Jan. 25-26.
The exhibition includes rare 18th- and 19th-century maps of Georgia and South Carolina from the museums collection, as well as the collection of the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library at UGA. The maps illustrate the developing geographic understanding of the region and document the increasing presence of European settlers along the Savannah River. The Savannah River Valley runs from Savannah to Augusta, and includes the Georgia towns of Elberton and Hartwell as well as Charleston and Aiken, S.C.
Selected works of decorative arts, including silver, furniture and ceramics, highlight the diverse cultural influences in the region. These pieces, which represent the growing collection of the Henry D. Green Center for the Study of the Decorative Arts at the Georgia Museum of Art, include a 19th-century silver Savannah basket, a rocking chair from about 1830 that is most likely slave-made, and other rare pieces. Exceptional pieces from private collections, such as a slave-made Dave Jug, furniture and Edgefield pottery, will also be on view. The exhibition also includes works on paper by John Abbott documenting plant and insect life of the Savannah River Valley; they are from the museums collection.
