Bulletin board

Direct deposit
At the beginning of this month, all new employees at UGA are being required, as a condition of employment, to sign up for direct deposit of payroll and reimbursements such as travel expenses.
This new policy does not affect existing employees at this time.
The staff in Human Resources and the payroll department will assist new employees having any difficulties because of this policy. Questions should be directed to Andy Brantley in Human Resources (542-2621) or Bob McGee in payroll (542-3431).

College workshop
On Feb. 20, UGA will host its second Two-Year Colleges Workshop for faculty and staff from public and private two-year institutions in the state, plus Athens Technical College. The first such workshop was held two years ago and the evaluations indicated an interest in making this a regular event. The workshop is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Instruction and has been planned by a group of 16 faculty and staff from across campus. All interested members of the community are invited to register and attend.
The primary purpose of the workshop is to develop and strengthen our relationships with the institutions which send us a substantial portion of our transfer students. The goal is to provide accurate and timely information about UGA admissions procedures, academic requirements and policies, academic advising, and related services and programs, in order to help faculty and staff at the two-year institutions work most effectively with their students who wish to transfer to UGA. The more informed our colleagues at these institutions are about admissions matters, preferred core courses, course prerequisites, entrance requirements for degrees, majors, minors, certificates, and other related matters, the more prepared and successful the students will be when they arrive on our campus.
In addition to the plenary and concurrent workshop sessions, there will be a display area showcasing UGA academic programs (undergraduate and graduate) and student affairs departments.
Based on initial indications of interest from the two-year schools, we expect to host a good number of academic administrators, faculty and students from University System institutions, private two-year colleges and Athens Tech. Equally strong participation by UGA faculty and staff will help us assure a valuable and positive workshop. There is no cost to UGA participants.
The registration deadline is Jan. 18 for participants who wish to join the group for lunch (at no cost).
For additional information about registration and the program, see the Web site at www.uga.edu/ovpi. (There are links on both “News,” and the “Advising and Retention” pages.) Questions may be directed to rhoden@uga.edu, 542-4336.

Silent auction
The Student Council on Globalization, a UGA student club devoted to promoting friendship between U.S. and international students, requests donations of international items (trinkets, art, clothing, jewelry, cookbooks, etc.) for a silent auction, to take place on Feb. 1. The money raised will be used for study-abroad scholarships and scholarships for international students. If you have an item to donate, contact Lindsey Parsons, SCOG adviser, 542-9567, lparsons@uga.edu.

Lilly Fellows nominations
The Office of Instructional Support and Development is now accepting nominations for 2002-03 Lilly Teaching Fellows. The two-year program is designed to help new faculty improve their teaching skills.
Each Fellow selects a mentor and receives support (up to $2,500) for an instructional improvement project. Fellows and mentors attend meetings and retreats to discuss teaching issues.
Candidates must be tenure-track assistant professors holding a Ph.D. or terminal degree in their field and three years or less as a tenure-track faculty member. Nominations are accepted from department heads and deans.
Deadline for submission of applications or nominations is March 1. Nomination forms are available on the OISD Web site (www.isd.uga.edu/faculty/lilly.html). For further information, contact Tricia Kalivoda (542-0415; tlk@uga.edu).

Apprentice program
The Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine Office of Special Academic Programs is accepting applications for its Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program.
Up to 15 college students interested in biomedical research will be selected to live on the MCG campus June 8 through July 26 to learn modern laboratory techniques and work as part of a faculty member’s research team. The program also features classes in medical terminology, research techniques, learning skills, test-taking and other enrichment activities, including evening forums with health-care practitioners.
The program provides tuition, dormitory fees and stipends to cover food, books and other living expenses. The stipends are contingent on the student earning at least a C in all program courses.
Eligibility requirements include at least one year of college completed by the beginning of the program, with biology, general chemistry or physics with lab; a 3.0 grade point average or higher; SAT or ACT score; a strong interest in biomedical research; U.S. citizenship or a permanent student visa; two letters of recommendation from faculty; membership in a group underrepresented in the health professions or socially, educationally or economically disadvantaged; and involvement in extracurricular activities. The application deadline, including all supporting materials, is March 1. For an application or more information, contact Wilma A. Sykes-Brown, associate administrative director of MCG Educational Enrichment Programs, CB-1801, Augusta, GA 30912-1900; wsykes@mail.mcg.edu.

Telephone orders
To upgrade telephone service and install a new central telephone switcher for campus on March 15, the university has instituted a blackout period for the addition of new telephone lines, moves or other changes to telephone service on campus until March 15. The switchover itself is expected to be transparent to the end user. For information, call 542-6962.

Bulletin board is limited to announcements from campus-based organizations whose membership includes UGA faculty and/or staff.
