head the Office of Instruction while a search is conducted for a permanent successor to Tom Dyer, who stepped down at the end of fall semester to return to teaching and research. Shedd has been associate vice president for instruction since September 1999. His responsibilities have included supporting the operations of Faculty Affairs, encouraging teaching initiatives such as the creation of the Teaching Academy and the Freshman College Summer Experience, and working with the Admissions Office.
Were pleased to have Peter Shedd move into this role, says Provost Karen Holbrook. His knowledge of the office and excellent working relationships with faculty and staff will allow all activities to be sustained and move forward while the search progresses.
Shedd holds degrees from the Terry College and the School of Law and has spent his entire career at UGA except for one year as a law clerk for chief judge Anthony Alaimo of the Southern District Court in 1977-78. A legal studies faculty member in the Terry College since 1978, Shedd also has served as executive assistant to university Presidents Henry King Stanford and Charles B. Knapp.
Additionally, he served as director of the educational program for the University Systems Consortium on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from 1995 to 1997.
He is a member of the American Arbitration Associations Panel of Arbitrators and serves as a mediator with the University Systems Mediation Program and UGAs Alternative Dispute Resolution Task Force.
A recipient of the Josiah Meigs Award for Teaching Excellence, Shedd was named 1993 Professor of the Year for the state by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
He is a charter member of the UGA Teaching Academy and has been a Senior Teaching Fellow. Shedd also has extensive service with University Council, including serving as chair of the Executive Committee.
