Education in the Philippines
The University of Santo Tomas, in the Philippines, is hoping to eliminate difficult travel to the campus by offering a new distance-education course. The new program will begin this month in the village of Malasa, and features battery-powered two-way radios to teach rural villagers. The university plans to expand the program to more villages and eventually to switch from radios to satellite television.
Historian faces plagiarism charges
Stephen Ambrose has been accused of plagiarism for the third time this month.
Currently not affiliated with any academic institution, the author and historian is being asked to respond to claims that some passages in his books have been copied from other authors. At least two of Ambroses books contain passages that are almost identical to those found in books by Joseph Balkoski and Robert Sam Anson.
Ambrose has also acknowledged he did not properly cite a book by the late Jay Monaghan and he has publicly apologized to Thomas Childers, a historian and professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
