Maurice C. Daniels, associate professor and director of the masters degree program in the School of Social Work, has authored a new book that illuminates a pivotal chapter in the historic fight for desegregation and civil rights.
Horace T. Ward: Desegregation of the University of Georgia, Civil Rights Advocacy, and Jurisprudence, published by Clark Atlanta University Press, recounts Wards unsuccessful-- though precedent-setting--struggles to gain admission to the UGA School of Law in the 1950s. It also chronicles his later accomplishments as an attorney, legislator and jurist, including his appointment as the first African-American federal judge in Georgia.
Vernon Jordan Jr. called Danielss book a compelling narrative and a clear, concise, and authentic account . . . drawing on an impressive amount of archival data, court records, and first-person accounts.
Julian Bond, chairman of the board of the NAACP, called the book a must-read for scholars and the general public (for anyone who wants to know more about the struggle for civil rights).
The book is based on the research Daniels conducted to produce the award-winning two-part public television documentary, Foot Soldier for Equal Justice--The Horace Ward Story.
Daniels is founder and director of the Foot Soldier Project for Civil Rights Studies and Research at UGA. In October, the Athens-Clarke County NAACP honored him with a special African-American History and Social Justice Award for his distinguished career in social justice, community service and civil rights.
Daniels will sign copies of his book on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in Atlanta at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American History and Culture.
