YEARS IN CURRENT POSITION: Two.
JOB DESCRIPTION: One of the main things I do is provide administrative support to Dr. Potter, the university librarian, and also Eric Matthews, who is the director of administrative services for the libraries. I also serve as the office manager for the administrative office here. I am the liaison for departments within the library as well as campus-wide. I gather data, analyze it and send it to the Association of Research Libraries, which rates our library nationwide. I also chose all the pictures on the first floor of the library and am involved with special events at the library.
A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK: The only thing really typical is the hours, and I maintain Dr. Potters schedule. He is so involved in things I feel like part of my job is to stay involved and up to date on what he does.
THE MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB: I am also an Oconee County commissioner so it benefits me in that role as far as the information I can gather from here. I really enjoy working in an academic environment.
THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF MY JOB: Keeping up with Dr. Potter and his activities and learning the university policies that are in place in order to be effective as an employee here.
OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE: Originally a volunteer for youth in Oconee County, I realized the commissioners were not taking the young people into account and felt the commissioners could do more for them. Now I work as a commissioner in Oconee County.
I also worked for GMAC, a finance company for General Motors, for 10 years and have had various secretarial positions.
IF I WERE NOT DOING THIS JOB, I WOULD MOST LIKE TO: Spend more time with my family. I have two very active teenagers, Brad, 16, and Beth, 14, and sometimes it is a struggle to get to their events.
OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS: I enjoy reading. I do a lot of volunteer work. I coach cheerleading and softball and volunteer for the March of Dimes.
FAVORITE MUSIC: Country. My husband, Michael, writes a little bit and a local artist recorded his most recent song.
A BOOK I WOULD RECOMMEND TO OTHERS: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
I like the differences in the sisters but they still love each other and show respect even though they have different personalities. I think there is a lesson to be learned there as far as opposites getting along.
THE PEOPLE I ADMIRE MOST ARE: My great aunt and great uncle, Richard and Margaret Brown. They raised me and have a lot to do with me and my personality and the goals I set.
THE ISSUE THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAYS WORLD: The fast pace that everyone is in now. I think we sometimes lose track of family time. I think the tragedy of 9/11 has made us slow down a little bit and look at our values and morals. My uncle asked me once if the world stopped right at that second would I be proud of what I was doing. I think if we stopped and asked ourselves that question the world might be a little bit better place.
