State budget proposal includes pay raises, other UGA priorities
Gov. Roy E. Barness budget proposal to the General Assembly contains a 3.5 percent pay-raise pool for University System faculty and staff while addressing a number of the universitys other top priorities.
While some may think this is not as strong as previous budgets, in the context of the downturn in state tax receipts during the slumping economy this is a strong statement of support for UGA by the governor, says President Michael F. Adams.

Computational Center director wins chemistry award
Norman L. Allinger, director of the Computational Center for Molecular Structure and Design and professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of Georgia, has been named winner of the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Chemistry, a major international career achievement award.
For more than 150 years, Franklin Medals, sponsored by the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, have honored outstanding individuals who have transformed entire fields of knowledge through their scientific discoveries and technological innovations.

Former White House chief of staff and expert on health issues Hamilton Jordan will be a featured speaker at the 2002 Public Service and Outreach conference, Bridging Research and Outreach for a Better Georgia and Nation, to be held Jan. 31 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The conference is co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach and the Office of the Vice President for Research.
Time for Magic
UGAs Ballroom Performance Group, directed by Mark Wheeler, will offer four performances of Ballroom Magic 2002 Jan. 31 through Feb. 2. The company of student dancers will perform at 8 p.m. each night, and will offer a 2 p.m. matinee Feb. 2. All performances are in the New Dance Theatre in the dance building on South Campus.
