War and the academy
The Association of American Colleges and Universities sponsored a forum last month called What Is the Academys Responsibility in a Time of War? in Washington, D.C.
Speakers at the forum suggested that recent events emphasize the importance of requiring students to learn foreign languages and understand foreign issues. Speakers also emphasized the importance of putting current events in a historical perspective, helping students think more critically about other countries and about what role the United States plays.
Texas dean leads Enron investigation
The dean of the University of Texas School of Law, William C. Powers Jr., who was elected to Enrons board in October, is leading a special committee within the corporation to review the events that led to the companys filing for bankruptcy.
Powers told The New York Times that his connections with the company would not keep him from conducting an impartial investigation into Enrons affairs. Critics see the investigation as a reflection of the same conflicts of interest that contributed to the downfall of the company.
